DISTANCE & XC SQUAD
Train with us
We train twice a week at the Southwark Park athletics track – you’ll find us at the top of the back Straight. Jump off at either Surrey Quays or Canada Water and head to Southwark Park where you’ll see the track at the most eastern part of the park. They are on a Tuesday and a Thursday at 7-8.30pm. These sessions vary from speed reps to longer aerobic sessions depending on the time of year.
On a Wednesday, as a member of the club, you have access to our Bootcamp run on the Thames, leaving from both Strand and Guy’s Campuses at 2.30. It is approximately 8km and has several fitness exercises on route to make sure you are all round athlete! This also makes it a super fun and accessible session for new runners as the stops allow everyone to catch up and congregate periodically.
On Fridays you can find us in a slightly different setting – in the gym/studio doing circuits! Injury prevention is the main aim here (and summer six packs of course).
We also have a Sunday Long run that leaves from Southwark Park and does a loop of the city, the timings for this are to be arranged so don’t hesitate to ask me when this will be. It’s intended to be 10 miles at a slow pace but feel free to join in for however much of that you want! There’s no pressure to run it all.
Saturdays are for hills and occasionally grasswork, as will be confirmed throughout the season.
We also have a club Strava that I am really keen to get everyone joined up to so we can all share the love, kudos and motivation with one another! You’ll find the sessions for the week posted on here and will be able to see upcoming races. Additionally, if you ever want to do a session outside of these utilise the Facebook chat group that will be setup in September to let people know what you’re doing and find a training partner to join in with you.
Neil is a UKA qualified Athletics & Running Coach. He has previous experience with Croydon Harriers (London/Surrey) and has focussed on the road, cross-country and track 3000m+. He has ran over 15 marathons across the UK, Europe and Asia and has also been an ultra runner!
Not only is Andy the President of our partner club, London City AC, but he is also a UKA trained Distance coach.

From October – January we compete in Cross Country’s. These are for all abilities are super fun, we run for individual positions but we’re big on performing as a team and getting more points than the other universities. This creates some of the best team atmosphere’s of all of the races across the year and definitely feature in some of my favourite’s memories so far at King’s!
LUCA XC – distances are typically 4k for women and 8k for men
Some distance athletes shudder at the thought of running indoor on the track but not us! I encourage you all to take part and give it a try, they make for a great atmosphere and great weekends, particularly BUCS where we travel and stay over as a team.
When summer finally arrives we join the other squads to battle it out on the track. Events offered range from 10000m to 100m. You can take part in as many events as you want ( or physically can – because we all want to do every event possible for the team) and our aim here is take the LUCA title in the final event of the series. There are also medals for the best three performing athletes across the series at the end of the season.
We also send a team to BUCS outdoor athletics, held the weekend of 4th -6th May at Bedford international stadium.
In addition to these races, we have athletes who travel to compete in a multitude of races around the country so you’ll always find one of us wanting to do a race you’re interested in. These even the possibility of travelling to race abroad for those of you who might be really adventurous, if you have any ideas feel free to chip in and let us know!
