A Postgraduate Friendly Club

At Kings AXC we know that not all sports clubs and societies are ‘postgraduate friendly’. Our club is different. We realise that many athletes hit their peak during their postgraduate studies. In fact, some of our top performing athletes have been postgraduate students. Hence we make sure our postgraduate members are made to feel welcome by the club. We understand that going out for heavy drinking socials in the middle of the week may not be possible for postgrads. That’s why we have a range of socials to fit every taste.

I was previously involved in athletics during my undergrad at the University of Bristol, but wanted to give athletics one final try during my time at King’s. I eventually joined the club late in 2014 after signing up at freshers’ fair two years earlier! I immediately regretted waiting so long, as the club was very welcoming and happy to have me on board.

King’s Athletics is a very social club, with a range of abilities and ages, from 18 year old freshers, right up to final year PhD students and even alumni members. I’ve been supported well, through training and development plans, easy access to competitions and a great social atmosphere to boost! King’s have also hosted two amazing training weekends in collaboration with UCL Athletics (50% training, 50% social and banter), taking us to Canterbury and Brighton! Another plus is the annual athletics development day, a great opportunity to meet and train with the club’s GB athletes, like Dina Asher-Smith, Laviai Nielsen and Shona Richards.

On a personal level I’ve literally loved every moment of being a member of King’s Athletics so far. It’s the perfect de-stress from postgraduate studies and we’ve enjoyed many successes at SESSA, LCAS, LUCA indoors and even the BUCS championships!
